Simulation of Distributed Systems across the Cloud-to-Thing Continuum
SimCoT @ PDP 2027
A forum for modeling, simulation, digital twins, experimentation and AI-assisted methods for next-generation distributed systems spanning IoT, Edge, Fog and Cloud.
The Cloud-to-Thing Continuum is characterized by heterogeneous, dynamic computing environments spanning IoT, Edge, Fog, and Cloud infrastructures. Designing, deploying, and managing applications across these environments introduces significant challenges related to resource management, orchestration, scalability, reliability, performance, and energy efficiency. Modeling and simulation offer a powerful approach to investigating these challenges by enabling the evaluation of distributed systems and applications under diverse workloads, infrastructures, and operating conditions before their real-world deployment. At the same time, advances in digital twins, emulation, experimentation, and AI/ML-based methods provide new opportunities for designing and evaluating complex distributed systems. These challenges have recently become a major focus of several ongoing EU Horizon projects (e.g. Swarmchestrate, and related initiatives, such as the Cognitive Computing Continuum Cluster), driving the development of novel architectures, methods, tools, and real-world application use cases. Building on these developments, papers submitted to this special session are expected to investigate novel modeling and simulation approaches, tools, and methodologies for distributed computing environments. The session aims to bring together contributions from the modeling and simulation community as well as broader research on distributed systems across the Cloud-to-Thing Continuum.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Modeling and simulation of IoT, Edge, Fog, and Cloud systems
- Simulation frameworks, tools, methodologies, and testbeds for distributed systems
- Modeling and simulation of large-scale distributed systems and workloads
- Digital twins of distributed infrastructures
- Reproducibility, validation, and benchmarking of distributed system simulators
- Hybrid approaches combining simulation, emulation, and real-world experimentation
- Decentralized application-level orchestration and deployment
- Resource management, scheduling, and optimization in distributed systems
- Performance, scalability, reliability, and energy efficiency of distributed applications
- AI/ML-based methods for federative and autonomous distributed systems
- Results and use cases from EU Horizon projects on next-generation distributed systems
- Any other relevant topic related to modeling, simulation, and management across the Cloud-to-Thing continuum
